The summer's hottest makeup is made from minerals

Mining for beauty By COLETTE BOUCHEZ at nydailynews.com

"The look of the season is natural, glowing, glistening skin - with nary a flaw the eye can see.

The "it" product of the season promises all that: It's natural mineral makeup - mined from the earth - that hides wrinkles, gives a sheer glow and skin-boosting benefits.

Women are snapping it up on home shopping networks, and brides swear by it for big-day beauty.

"Because the base of mineral makeup is titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which have natural anti-inflammatory properties, it can have a calming effect on the skin and for many people it won't aggravate conditions like acne or rosacea," says Dr. Kathryn Frew, a dermatologist at Juva MediSpa in Manhattan.

These minerals are also natural sunscreens - so most mineral makeup has an SPF of 15 or higher. Bare Minerals, credited as the pioneer of mineral makeup, even carries a seal of approval from the Skin Cancer Foundation.

"I wouldn't use it as my sole source of protection, but most loose mineral powders are a great way to touch up your sunscreen during the day," says Dr. Ellen Marmur, chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

First developed in the mid 1970s, mineral makeup was intended to do away with potential irritants, like fragrances and dyes and preservatives found in traditional cosmetics, plus preservatives like parabens, which some studies linked to cancer.

Today, not all companies play by these unspoken rules.

"Some mineral products contain less of these irritating ingredients than traditional makeup, but some can contain as much or more, so don't rely solely on the term 'mineral' alone - you really have to read the entire label to see what you are getting," says Frew.

But even among those that offer all-mineral formulas, there's another dividing line: products that contain "bismuth oxychloride" and those that don't.

A kind of "pseudomineral" made from copper, lead and chlorine byproducts, it's used as a filler and to create a pearlized, anti-aging effect. But purists like Kristin Adams, president of Afterglow Cosmetics, says looking young and dewy has its price.

"We don't use bismuth oxychloride because many women are allergic to it and either break out and/or itch - plus we prefer the more semi-matte look of the non-bismuth formula," says Adams.

Frew says when used in significant quantities, bismuth oxychloride can irritate acne and rosacea, so if you have these problems try to avoid it, or check to see how far down on the ingredient label it is - lower is better..."

Afterglow Cosmetics Product Review On Organic Mineral Makeup

Review by Image and Style News

Afterglow cosmetics product review on organic mineral makeup. I’ve recently been in search of a new mineral makeup. Since I have semi only borderline combination skin I find that mineral makeup gives me the best coverage and it keeps my skin from looking oily. Typically I use bareminerals but i’m always on the hunt for a new mineral foundation to match my skintone. I though I would try Afterglow cosmetics since they only use organic products in their makeup…including lipgloss. There mineral makeup is bismuth free which is used in many mineral makeup products including bare minerals. I love bare minerals but it sometimes can make me itch.....

I Dream of Genie Reviews Afterglow Lip Love Lipstick

It is said that the average woman ingests up to four pounds of lipstick or gloss in a lifetime. According to the Environmental Working Group, a partner of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, one-third of personal care products contain at least one chemical linked to cancer. With that in mind, I decided to begin looking for some safe alternatives, and I found a GREAT one with Afterglow Mineral Cosmetics’ Organic Love Lipsticks.Depending on the shade, these lipsticks are made with approximately 70% to 82% certified organic ingredients. Some of the key ingredients include organic jojoba seed oil, Vitamin E, organic pomegranate seed extract, organic grape seed extract, and organic apricot kernel. The rest of the ingredients are iron oxides and micas, (for pigment) and titanium oxide (for opacity), which are all pharmaceutical grade inert minerals. Organic Love is free from petroleum, gluten, paraben, nuts and the entire line of cosmetics is cruelty and gluten free. These gals over there are on the ball!Aside from all those benefits, the lipstick itself goes on light and smooth, not heavy and waxy. Your lips will feel fabulous, as though the nutrients were going to work to moisturize and condition instantaneously. For real!I highly recommend this product, so go to their site, and eat all the lipstick you want.Note: Visit the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics site, which has a ton of information about all beauty products and their ingredients. You will find it invaluable.Posted by Kristine Livadas @ I Dream Of Greenie

sofeminine.co.uk Reviews Afterglow Foundation

Hot on the heels of all things natural and organic, mineral make-up is everywhere at the moment, but look before you leap on the bandwagon. Not all mineral products are any better for your skin than 'standard' make-up. Many contain parabens, dyes and fillers, along with a chemical called bismuth oxychloride which can give a rather unatural orangey glow. Our current fave for quality mineral make-up is US brand Afterglow. Their organic mineral foundation contains pharmaceutical grade minerals and pigments, natural sunscreen and age-defying antioxidants. A worthy investment, especially if you have super-sensitive skin. It's even suitable for people with gluten sensitivity.Afterglow Organic Mineral Foundation, £28 (20 shades)

Dollface Reviews: Afterglow Cosmetics Organic Mineral Foundation

Hey, Dollface!
Afterglow Cosmetics’ Organic Mineral Foundation is 100% natural, contains a natural sunscreen, and it suitable for even the most sensitive of skin. Sadly, the trial tub was the wrong shade for my porcelain (ahem!) skin, so I handed it over to Norma of Keeping It Realtor (who does have sensitive skin), who writes:“I’ve never really been much of a foundation wearer. I hate the feeling of heavy makeup on my skin, so tinted moisturiser normally suits me fine. As someone with, ahem, more mature skin, I also prefer a “dewy” look, rather than a powdery one, which I think can be very aging, so, when I tried Afterglow Cosmetics Organic Mineral Foundation, I have to admit, I didn’t really expect to like it. Well, it just goes to show that it’s always worthwhile trying out something different every once in a while, because this was nothing like I’d imagined it…For a start, this foundation is as light as a feather on your skin - probably not surprising, given that it’s a powder, but as I mentioned, I had expected to feel like I was caked in makeup, and that wasn’t the case at all. I brushed it on (a proper kabuki brush would’ve been a good idea here, but I didn’t have one, so used the biggest brush I had), buffed it in, and was really surprised by the coverage, which was sheer, matt, and not at all chalky, which is what I’d worried about. As for the fine lines - my daughter has always hated mineral makeup because she finds it emphasizes any lines she has, but this wasn’t the case for me. I couldn’t say it made me look younger (but of course, it doesn’t claim to), but it definitely didn’t emphasize the lines, and just left my skin looking smooth and even - I really didn’t feel like I was wearing it at all.Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by this. Will I give up my tinted moisturiser for it? Well, maybe not all the time, but I will definitely be alternating it with this one now!

SmartSkincare.com Reviews Afterglow Multi-Tasking Foundation

Skin Care Review: Afterglow Cosmetics Multi-Tasking Foundation

by Kris

Rating
Excellent

Benefits
all natural (no bismuth oxide or parabens), amazing coverage, beautiful color

Drawbacks
a tad messy as a powder

Details
All natural, this mineral makeup is absolutely amazing! Geat color selection, very easy to apply, looks amazing, has improved my skin, good for oil control, wears all day, i've even found it's semi waterproof which is great during the summer, contains an SPF as well! I will never go back to regular liquid foundation bc. it didn't work, didn't cover, made my skin worse and was more expensive.

Afterglow Cosmetics Multi-Tasking Foundation is a dream come true. It's AMAZING. I only wish I had found it years ago and saved myself, my skin and my wallet the heartache of those inferior foundations!

Conclusions
Buy it NOW. You will not regret it! guarantee :)

Kiss N Makeup Reviews Afterglow Organic Mineral Eyeshadow

Now we all know mineral makeup is uber big this year, but when people think of minerals they tend to think of foundation, yet there’s so much more than that available. Using mineral eyeshadow can be less irritating to the sensitive eye area, and the loose powder formulation creates a really gentle wash of colour. I’ve been testing out mineral eyeshadows £16 from AfterGlow Cosmetics and really love the consistency on my skin. The product is certified organic the Environmental Working Group and is really gentle on my eyes. I wear contact lenses and there’s no discomfort with this product at all. The eyeshadows are bismuth oxychloride free, talc-free, chemical-free and dye-free, and come in an amazing selection of colours.

Afterglow mineral cosmetics tried and tested

Mineral makeup is everywhere right now, and Afterglow is one of the newer additions to the UK cosmetics counter, having been a huge success in the States. It's got great ethical credentials, is certified cruelty-free by the BUAV and contains no parabens or fragrances. So how well does it actually work?
I managed to get my hands on a few samples of the '80% organic, 100% natural' range, and have asked a few members of the office to give me their verdict on the brand. Follow the jump to find out what they thought.
I tried the dusty rose blush, the first mineral blusher I've used. I liked this product a lot, as it was so soft and velvety it blended into my skin with ease, and gave a really natural-looking glow. It was easy to get the shade and intensity just right using a brush, creating as much or as little definition as you want. Catwalk Queen Editor-in-Chief Gemma tried the organic mineral setting powder over the weekend. The idea of this product is to help absorb oil to create a smoother finish, but it's also loaded with antioxidants to help preserve a youthful glow. Gemma tried the 'light' setting powder, and commented: "It's a perfect texture and works just as well as their mineral veil, but it's more yellow / orange toned which doesn't work so well with my skin. However I'm wearing it today, and I think it looks quite natural." Watch this space for our review of Afterglow's mineral foundation
